Frequently asked questions
Common questions from event organizers, schools and venues about event medical standby in California.
Are you an emergency service I can call?
No. In an emergency, call 911. We are a private company that provides medical staff for planned events, and we do not respond to emergency calls from the public. This website and its form are not monitored for emergencies.
Does having medical staff on site replace 911?
No. On-site clinicians can begin care right away, but patients who need a hospital still go through the local EMS system. Before the event, we work with you to agree how 911 will be called and how an ambulance would reach a patient at your site.
What is the difference between an EMT and a paramedic?
EMTs provide basic life support, such as assessment, oxygen, bleeding control and defibrillator use. Paramedics add advanced life support, such as ECG monitoring, advanced airway care and medications, as approved by the local EMS agency.
In California, EMTs are certified through a local EMS agency and recognized statewide. Paramedics are licensed, and accredited by the local EMS agency.
What does an emergency nurse add?
Our emergency nurses are registered nurses with experience in emergency care. They can lead or support care at a first aid station, and carry out assessment and observation. They work within California nursing practice, and any treatment that requires a physician's order is addressed in the event's medical plan.
How many medical staff does my event need?
No single number fits every event. It depends on the crowd, the activity, the heat, alcohol, the layout of the site and the distance to a hospital. Send us the event details, and we will recommend coverage and explain our reasoning, so that you can weigh it for yourself.
Can you join a medical team we already have?
Yes. We can fill individual EMT, paramedic or nurse positions on an existing event medical team, or provide a complete team. If you already have a team, we would need to understand your plan, your medical direction and how our staff would fit in.
Do you transport patients?
Our service is on-site medical standby. Transport to a hospital is arranged through the local EMS system, and we plan with you in advance how that would work at your site.
Our school has an AED. Do we still need standby?
They do different jobs. California requires school districts and charter schools that offer interscholastic athletics to acquire at least one AED for each participating school, and to keep it available to athletic trainers, coaches and authorized persons at on-campus athletic events.
On-site clinicians add assessment and treatment. Standby does not replace your AED or your emergency action plan, and whether you need it depends on your event and your school's policies.
Does my event legally require medical coverage?
That depends on your city, county, venue and insurer. Start by checking your permit conditions and your venue contract, and tell us what they say. We can help you identify the local EMS agency, but we cannot give legal advice, and responsibility for permits stays with the organizer.
How far in advance should we contact you?
As early as you can, particularly if your permit calls for a medical plan, since local review can take time. If your event is close, please ask anyway, and we will tell you whether we are able to help.
What does coverage cost?
Cost depends on the number and level of clinicians, the hours, the equipment needed and the location. Because those vary so much from one event to another, we provide a written quote once we understand your event.
What do you need for a quote?
The date and hours, the location, the expected attendance, the type of event and any specific hazards. It also helps to know whether a permit, venue or insurer requires coverage. If you do not have every answer yet, send what you have.
What areas do you cover?
We are based in Madera and work across Madera, Fresno, Merced, Kings, Tulare and Mariposa counties. Local EMS requirements differ by county, and we check them during planning. For events further away, please ask.
